CarbAbuser's Notizen, 04 Jul 23

Nothing like being woken up mid-sleep with a charley horse in your calf. Now I know it's not from dehydration, as I drink easily 80 ounces of water a day. It's not lack of magnesium, as I take 500mg every night before bed. As Adam Ant's song goes "you don't drink, you don't smoke, what do you do?"

So today I'm having a cup of beef broth and Mio electrolytes to hopefully bump up anything missing from my diet.

Right now, it seems my right hand side is just on complete shut down. Hip and thigh muscle pain, buttocks still slightly swollen from my fall in spring, calf in spasm, as well as my arches. I'm flat-footed, so I get arch spasms quite often, but give me a break! Does it all have to come at once?

You can take more magnesium. My doc said I could take 2,4 or six of those 500mg caps to get rid of the cramping, so now I take two.

Six 500mg? Umm, I'd be weary of that. My understanding is 500mg is topped out max. Mind you, it may be different types, ie, I take magnesium oxide.

Try two. It's very benign stuff, and clearly, if you're cramping you could use more. It also comes in a spray that you can use topically. That works too.

I disagree it is "very benign stuff". It, along with any chemical or mineral element, has the possibility of being dangerous in large amounts. Along with my RLS medications, the magnesium dosage I take typically works. This is a blip. (I've tried the sprays, they did nothing for me)

if you are eating keto style you need to supplement with potassium too

Agreed, a keto diet requires extra nutrients and electroytes due to the nature of the low carb beast. However, my bloodworks recently came back with all areas being within "normal" range. Thus supplementing them would be pointless. The magnesium I have been on, with doctor supervision, for my RLS and occasional nighttime leg cramping. It became apparant that the RLS was not subsiding with magnesium alone, therefore I was put on medications for it. I would have expected that if an increase in magnesium was all I needed for my RLS, he would have increased it a few months ago, especially as he is quite aware of my aversion to medications.

Maybe its the mag oxide? Its not very bioavailable. Perhaps your dr can switch you to mag citrate or mag bisglycinate as both are more bioavailable and more readily absorbed. Even with a normal range blood panel you still should supplement when dieting with some things like vitamin C, D3 etc. For medical I see a GP but I also see a naturopath and dietician because most medical drs have very little education in natural and supplementary health care. They will always prescribe drugs when sometimes diet and supplements can help avoid drugs instead.

Might be something I should take up with my doctor next time I see him.

Oh my. My mom has such troubles with muscle spasms. I too have been having spasms in my foot and found a lump. Went to my family doctor and it’s resting on a nerve and it’s called Morton’s Neuroma. Seeing a specialist on Friday. This is all separate from everything else I have going on. 😓

Oh no hun. Hopefully it's nothing that requires surgery. Fingers and eyes crossed for you.
