Don't lose heart - it will all eventually come right. (I'm 65, and have managed to lose 20 kg over the past year and a bit - after giving up all hope.)
Have just recently started using the Fat Secret App on my cellphone to keep track of everything I eat. It calculates the calories automatically - and oh my goodness, have I made some swift smart changes to what I thought was a perfectly good plan! You may need to weigh some foods at the beginning just to get a proper sense of portion sizes, and you do need to enter everything. But it truly helps.
