I tried jicama for the first time yesterday and really liked it! I found a sign for it at the store but there were about 8 other root veggies in bins and it wasn't readily apparent which of the roots were jicama. Finally narrowed it down to 3 choices but ended up asking a store clerk which one was jicama.
Now, first off, I called it zhi-KA-ma. Unbeknownst to me, it's actually HICK-a-mah, probably a Spanish word. So, I felt a bit idiotic, there. Any-hoo, the first 2 produce clerks I asked looked at the sign, looked at the roots, and admitted they had no clue. They finally found a 3rd clerk who pointed to the root immediately.
I found a few recipes for the stuff that make it into a type of dessert, surprisingly. If any work out for me, I'll post them. But as a peeled snack, it's crunchy and somewhat sweet when eaten raw. It's supposed to be good shredded and put into salads and stir fry recipes, as well.
