ChrisComedy's Notizen, 03 Aug 14

Got a solid eight hours of sleep last night. The cooler weather helped. Today is a cheat day and a rest day. Bingeing on season four of "Justified.'

I learned something encouraging yesterday: I should get stronger wrists and grip from rowing. The Kuhn Rikon gripper popped the cap on my Special K protein shake this morning even more easily than yesterday.

I'm thinking about relying less on time spent rowing and more on the number of strokes. The question is how often should I raise my count. Maybe add 25 strokes every week? Got a pair of Speedo surf runner shorts to exercise in, rather than wearing shorts that are too big for me that aren't designed for exercise.

I'm on track for exceeding the number of steps I took yesterday. I'm thinking about dusting off my pedometer and using it to check the SmartHealth pedometer for accuracy.

Decluttering continues: I've got a dozen items listed on Freecycle. The Sunny mini stepper got picked up. I told the woman who got it she should get a lot of use out of it because it's sturdy. Her response was, "If I don't fall." I told her there is that and she should be careful because it puts you surprisingly high above the floor.

I hope my continued health focus on diet, fitness, and decluttering will pay off. That means taking the eye off the ball when it comes to stand-up comedy, but I can only do so much at a time. I've always said there are a lot of stand-up comics who would be better off getting healthier before they worried about getting better at comedy. That applies to me as well.

Deb_N, when I started with Fat Secret, I was doing calorie counting, and sporadically. I was losing and gaining weight. When I peaked at around 174 in late December, I knew I couldn't keep going down that road. I would have to get serious about weight loss or face health problems. It was also clear that I was going to have to do some sort of calorie restriction. I stumbled across an article online about the 4:3, alternate day, or every-other-day diet. It had a scientific basis and additional health benefits. I picked up a copy of "The Alternate-Day Diet Revised: The Original Up-Day, Down-Day Eating Plan to Turn on Your Skinny Gene." What I like about the diet is that it doesn't involve calorie restriction all the time. For every down day, there's an up day. I also like the fact that it's relatively easy to keep track on the 500-calorie days: a diet shake, a few snacks, and that's it. I'm in no danger of overdoing the strength training because I'm using light weights. I don't feel that much muscle soreness. I hope to work my way up to doing more cardio as well as varying the routines. I've just gone back to tracking my steps and hope to increase those.

As far as feeling good goes, I used to get so tense in my back, I had to lie down. That has dissipated. How much of that is better posture, flexibility exercises, or exercise in general, I don't know. I also feel I have more energy. Again, I used to get so fatigued, I would want to lie down. And that was from working at a desk. I used to get muscle spasms. I give the credit for those going away to four months of Pilates. I feel my plantar fasciitis has improved due to stretching. And I'm sleeping better - less insomnia and waking up wide awake in the middle of the night.

It's good that you are writing in your journal. You can go back and look at how you have progressed. Good for you on getting healthy. Keep doing what you are. It's working for you.

The exercise does work wonders on all parts of your body. I'm proof as well.

I would be exhausted without my ac. Lived for years in the country without it but here in the city can't sleep unless it's cool.

wholefoodnut, I hear you on that. I'm not a warm weather person. Still, it's not bothering me as much in August as it did in July. Could be I got acclimated or because we haven't had any real scorchers lately. I have whole apartment AC, but I don't like cooling the entire place when I'm only in one room and it adds $100 to my electric bill. There's also an environmental consideration. The power cut off today. I suspect it was because everyone's running the AC at full throttle and overloaded the system. I usually don't have any problems sleeping. The only time I do is when the temperature refuses to drop in the evening. Right now, we usually see it go down as low as 64.

If I didn't have the dang asthma, I'd probably be doing the same as you with the ac.
