For @margatyna … We found this last October in at Washington’s Crossing State Park in New Jersey. NJ has a no harvesting rule on public lands and we aren’t familiar with foraging back East nor did we know enough about maitake to be sure.

Absolutely love the taste of maitake and am quite sure this was what we stumbled across.

Hi,SK! I'm not familiar with maitake and never encountered them in our area. Otherwise, my phone is full with mushroom pictures!:))) I do observations, read and learn. Unfortunately, skillful people to learn from are scarce resource around here.

The hen-of-the-woods mushroom (Grifola frondosa) is a polypore mushroom that grows at the base of trees, especially old growth oaks or maples. It's native to China, Europe, and North America and is typically found in late summer to early autumn. They are absolutely delicious 😋🍄😋🍄😋
