cross eyed's Notizen, 01 Nov 11

OK so the we got hit by an early snow storm over the weekend. We got at least 12 inches of wet heavy snow. So you know what that means..... trees down, power out, accidents all over. So I am told it will be a week to 10 days before the power is restored. This is a little scary to me because how am I going to stick to my diet and exercise program. It is so hard to cook without water and electricity. We have the grill (thank god) but, we can't wash dishes, so how creative can u get and it is getting dark earlier now. HELP!!!! Someone give me ideas and motivate me!!!

Use paper plates if you have them, grill as much as you can at one time to save on charcoal or gas,if it's cold enough use your cooler outside to keep your cooked meats cold.if you can get to the store you can get water and heat it on the grill, make a pot of chili on the grill and scrap the diet if you have to until the power is on.survival comes first before the diet does. You can always journal later and we'll be here for you when you can resume.

Used to wash out my army eating utensils with snow. Melt the snow and boil the water for eating and drinking. Don't use any yellow stuff though. :)

wow, 10 days is a lot. I was out for 8 days after Irene and that was quite long. And it was not cold! As for emergencies, I bought a little 2 flame gas cooker, the cheapes I could find. If weather like that comes up, fill your bathtub with water, you can use that for washing dishes etc. I know, that does not help right now. Do you have a firestation nearby? They normally provide water for drinking and washing and showers etc so you can clean up and stock up.

Did your son come home for graduation? How did it go? What do you guys have for heat? Let's pray it's not a week to 10 days. If you have stuff in the freezer, you will probably have to pack it out in the snow or a cold room. Do you have a generator or access to one? Woodburner, kerosene heater, etc.? Got anybody you can stay with that has power? Is a motel room an option? Do you have candles, or a lantern for lighting? If you can pack buckets of snow and bring them in to thaw, you can flush toilets. The heating situation is critical; if you can keep warm, you can make it through anything. If you don't have any way to heat a room, you'll need to conserve body heat with plenty of blankets and warm clothing. Avoid sweating. We've gone some fairly long times without power; keeping warm and avoiding food spoilage are key.
