Thursday, 4/13 Steps = 17,488

Since using a Fitbit I have been pondering some things... Yesterday I consumed 1,174 calories. Fitbit says I burned 2,454 calories. Now I know that Fitbit has been accused of over estimating calorie burn by 200 to 300 a day, but that still gives me a calorie deficit of around 1,000 a day. As yesterday is pretty indicative of what I do each day, I would guess that I have a weekly calorie deficit of around 7,000 per week. If losing a pound of fat each week requires a calorie deficit of 3,500, then logically I should be losing about 2 pounds a week. I have lost 28lbs in 14 weeks. I'm shocked that the logic seems to work.

Besides calorie control I have removed almost all white sugar and processed foods from my diet. My plan is based on high fiber, high protein, low carb, moderate fat. I have also tried to drink more water.

I'm wondering how much the 'quality' of the food I eat matters? If I ate the same reduced number of calories, but it was mostly chips, cake and diet Pepsi, would it make any difference to the amount of weight lost? I have no idea.

28 lbs in 14 weeks is amazing, go calorie deficits! Not a big sudden drop, but a steady firm loss. Congrats and keep it up!

Whole foods (like an apple) have fiber, which your body will take longer to work at digesting, so you will feel full longer. Boil the apple, smash it, and stick it in a can (for a nice processed food product we call applesauce) and Motts has just taken several steps out of the digestion process for your stomach. So it goes through your system quickly, leaving you hungry and craving more food after only an hour. The chance of you eating more than 1200 calories in a day goes up, since you're always hungry!

That's why the whole calorie count thing is bunk! If I ate 1200 calories a day but it was all junk food, would I lose weight. No. It's all about macros ie fat, protein, & carbs, and eating whole foods. Weight loss begins in the kitchen. :-)

interesting thought! I'm on mostly carb diet due to oral sugery...no teeth yet....lots of mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese, and oatmeal/malt o meal since November 2016. First surgery was in June 2016 but it was only the bottom teeth...but total weight loss is 60lbs. so I would say it is possible to still lose if you counted the calories and didn't go over. Since surgery I've eaten ice cream for dinner cuz only so much mashed potatoes can be consumed.. lol

Yes, you could still lose weight. No, calorie counting is not bunk. But you would be hungry if you only ate 1200 calories of junk food because it has no sustenance to it. But I know people who drink soda all day and eat single serving bags of chips and they don't have a weight issue. They aren't healthy, but they don't have a weight issue.

Yes good point imlml. I do feel hunger often but just can't eat what I want and have no appetite for what I can eat so I fill it with water or coffee.

Thanks everyone. I haven't had this kind of success before so I think the type of food matters for the reasons you stated. I haven't been nearly as hungry as other times I have tried low calorie plans. I think the fiber and protein are helping with appetite. I will probably have my cholesterol checked in June. I will be interested to see what has happened over the 6 months of eating healthy and walking a lot.
