So I'm starting the Ration Challenge to support Syrian refugees. I had to offset it by one meal because my college mentor I haven't seen in like a decade came to town and I wanted to do breakfast with him, but with the lunch I'm about to eat, the challenge has begun!

I'm hoping for a handful of benefits from this challenge. Most important is an appreciation for the challenges some of my fellow humans endure. Beyond that though, I think it will help me gain resiliency for committing to a diet which I've had trouble with in the past. It will force me to learn how to adjust proportions and learn to prep meals.

This week is going to be a serious challenge, but I'm quite excited about it. Because of the gamified structure of the competition, if you'd like to sponsor me (the money goes to providing meals to Syrian refugees) you can do so here: https://my.rationchallengeusa.org/cliffnhansen Sponsorship helps me level up to salt, fruit, and vegetables.

Even though I've went so long not going to the gym often and really abandoning my eating plan, it was nice to see that I never returned all the way to my previous start weight. Now that I've been below 200, I know I can get back. I also don't fully consider this a failure, because I also know a lot of the things that got in my way to cause me to fall off the wagon.

Next week I'm going to be doing the ration challenge, to eat as Syrian refugees do for a week. I can't imagine that won't have an impact on my weight, so go to my page to check out posts of my experience as I go, or better yet: to sponsor me so I can add vegetables to my diet! https://my.rationchallengeusa.org/cliffnhansen

There have been a few interesting medical things come up in my life which is part of the reason I'm back on here. But one thing has been the discovery of a chemical imbalance that might contribute to depression and obesity. I'll likely start medication for that soon, and it might give me a leg up to help with exercise by giving me more energy. Of course I've created a lot of bad habits over the years which need to be unlearned and replaced, but if there is something that can improve my energy and lower my depression, I can't think of anything more wonderful. It will help me do a better job of doing the natural things to improve the same things through exercise and diet, so I imagine I'll get even healthier yet. Really crossing my fingers!

I've had so much trouble concentrating lately. I'm worrying about that because I know I'm falling behind on work. My doctor just increased my meds dosage so hopefully that will help. In better news, my triglycerides went down by 660 points! I'm still above where I should be but my doc says I'm doing very well and if I keep the work I've been doing going, I could be healthier than the average American in no time at all. So I'm excited about that. It's been hard and there have been a lot of sacrifices since I got that original blood test, but it looks like I've dodged a bullet on both diabetes and having a stroke, so I'm going to do what I can to keep going and keep improving. I also ended up as organizer for an alcohol-free meetup group, so that should be fun. So yeah, hard to concentrate, but I'm still getting a lot of health stuff done!
