Well, since starting my diet over break, I've lost a pants size (from 8/10 depending on brand to 6/8 depending on brand). I also have more muscle than the last time I was up in the 150's and my arms are only 12 inches as opposed to 14 inches back in 2008ish

Gained about 20 pounds over the last 12 months, gah! I haven't been counting calories online but mentally have kept it around 1400/1500 max. That's apparently way over what my body is capable of digesting, which is quite frustrating. (At 158 lbs, my BMI after finals week was "overweight" and at 155 lbs at my height I'm definitely chubby.)
Things I have figured out:
a) sugared drinks must really mess with my metabolism in some crazy way, because even if my calories are low in general energy drinks make me gain big
b) the traditional low fat high fiber diet does not work for me
What works for losing (and probably maintaining):
A) Lots of kombucha and probiotics
B) Some dense carb staple I can eat small amounts of as a snack throughout the day and feel full on, like gluten free lemon cookies by WOW or Dutch almond bars. I call it my "lembas" (like the hobbits' filling elf bread in Fellowship of the Ring :) )I typically eat up to 600 calories of the staple (three almond bars or about 6 lemon drop cookies)
C) I sometimes replace the staple with something else equivalent like eggs on toast
D) beef jerky and string cheese with or without a small bag of nuts makes another great snack (with the nuts it's like half a meal replacement)
Other than the "staple" and the staple replacements, I can eat as many salad veggies (light uncooked greens and tomatos, carrots, etc) as I want, as much fruit as I want, and if I choose one serving of "dinner vegetables" (broccoli etc, which takes my body more time to digest). My calorie max is around 1100 calories.
On this diet I have fairly rapid weight loss (about a quarter pound a day). Unfortunately maintenance is something I am still figuring out. I seem to always either be losing or gaining.
One thing for sure: energy drinks and pop are out
