Well I got back to exercise this week. As I mentioned in my earlier post, last week was a bust. My weigh in reflected that by gaining 0.1lbs. One thing I did do last week was go to the YMCA. Been a member for a few months now, yet never went. I was enjoying my nature hikes and didn’t need to go. But with a busted hot water heater, I needed a hot shower. So my first trip to the Y was just to take a bath. [Don’t judge.]

I think the key was actually going and seeing how the traffic was and how busy the place was. I decided that since Alabama is now hitting the 90 degree mark with 10,000% humidity, now would be a good time to move my morning hike indoors, so I tried an elliptical for the first time. In the past I have used treadmills, and hated them. They don’t allow for the natural speed up and slow down real walking does. The elliptical, however does. It was weird at first getting used to the motion, but once I got used to it, it wasn’t that bad. Is it as fun as walking through the wet lands? No, but it didn’t totally suck either.

It was a bit more grueling than actually walking, however. By the time I was 3 miles in I was drenched in sweat and my body was screaming, “make it stop!” Which I did, because I was running behind on time anyway. The good thing was I could watch Designated Survivor on Hulu while working. I am like 3 weeks behind on that, 4 weeks behind on 24 and several months behind on Homeland. There are several other show I like that I didn’t even start watching this season. This will give me a chance to catch up on everything.

It is a little out of my way to go to the Y before work so that means getting up at 5AM rather than 5:30, but I think I can do it. (But sometimes I do miss the getting up at 7:15 I did when I was a lazy toad that did no exercise.)

So we will see how the Y goes over the Summer, but I do plan on going back to my swamp this fall!

This is going to be a long post. But since I was AWOL most of last week, maybe I am just making up for lost time…
Last week was tough on me and I am not even sure why. Well, the “why” is I was suffering from severe depression, but I am not sure why the depression was there. Last week had every reason to be an awesome week!
First off, it was my birthday week. My wife thinks that may have been part of my depression reason. Maybe she is right on a subconscious level, I was depressed about getting a year older. However, I have never experienced that before and, in all honesty, thanks to my efforts this year, I am in better health turning 46 that I was turning 36.
Secondly got nothing but great news from the doctors last week … well mostly. Ended up seeing 4 docs last week. Like I reported last week, my cardio doc gave me a good report, then I got my lab results back from my new PCP.
My blood glucose level dropped from 278 mg/Dl to 83 mg/Dl and my cholesterol dropped from 199 to 124 with my HDL (good cholesterol) raising from 33 to 40. My new PCP (who I still have not decided whether to keep or not) said if I keep up the good work, soon as I finish my current cholesterol and diabetes prescriptions there is no need to get them refilled. I am not longer considered to have T2 diabetes or a cholesterol problems. Lastly went to the dermatologist week to have a suspicious mole removed and the biopsy came back negative.
So, all those things were reasons to have a good week, yet Wednesday, I was so down, I couldn’t even get out of bed and called in sick. Thursday, my actual Birthday was a struggle. Spend half the day in doctor’s offices anyway and we didn’t even celebrate because things were so busy (we pushed it off until Saturday). Friday was also a struggle. I didn’t exercise for the 3rd day in a row, then gave up and left work an hour early.
I think last week probably boiled down to two things: First off, the Adderall issue. I am still unable to get that prescription refilled. I am trying to make an appointment with a psychiatrist, but I will run out of my current supply before she can see me. They have put me on the waiting list to see if I can get an earlier appointment.
Money the second problem. When you are already on a shoestring budget, unexpected financial problem hit hard.
I lost a bid on a website design. My price was good … and I mean REALLY good, but they still went with someone else. Probably got undercut with a “hobbyist” who will deliver a substandard product. They may be happy with what they end up getting, but I have been doing this for quite a while and guarantee my work. Amateur designers are killing this profession … but I digress.
Also, had to buy new tires last week. Was expecting that at all. I bought 90K tires back in 2014 and had less than 40K on them. Even with the “prorated” warranty NTB wanted close to $600 for a new set. Sam’s did have a good special on tires, however, on Saturday so I got them there. Still cost me $300, which happened to be all the birthday money I got from parents and in-laws.
Lastly my hot water heater had a small electrical fire on Wednesday. I am not a “handy man” and screwing with electricity scare the crap out of me, however I was able to avoid replacing the entire unit. Still had to drop $50 on copper wire and other supplies, however. Just not 100% sure what caused the fire to begin with, although the evidence looks like one of our “asshole” cats decided to pee on where the power connects to the tank.
Depression is a strange thing and will beat the crap out of you for real then slip away. The weekend was a bit better and by this morning I am back on track. Here is to hoping I can keep things positive!

My Primary Care Physician retired at the end of last month. That kinda sucked. I only started seeing her at the beginning of the year when my company's insurance plan changed and my old PCP wasn't covered in the new plan. However, she is the one who diagnosed my diabetes and cholesterol issue and got me on the path to better health I am on now.

Saw the new doctor yesterday. He pissed me off. It was his second week there, but he didn't bother to review my chart before seeing me and all he saw was a fat middle aged man sitting there. I explained I was there because my old PCP has prescribed me Adderall on my therapist's recommendation and I needed to get it refilled. He balked at the idea of it saying, "This place prescribed Adderall like candy. You don't need that, you just need to lose weight and exercise. That will help you mental issues."

"I have been losing weight," I relied.

"Of course you have, you have been taking Adderall! You need to change your diet and exercise, not rely on drugs to lose weight."

I admit I kinda like that approach. So many doctors just throw drugs at problems and don't treat the cause. However, since I have been dieting and exercising his point was moot. He then looked at my chart.

"This says you have hypertension but you BP was 128/79 today."

"Yes," I reply.

"So how did you get you BP under control?"

"Diet and exercise. I walk 4 miles every morning before work. I have cut out unhealthy foods and reduced my caloric intake dramatically. Also drastically cut refined sugars from my diet to battle my T2 diabetes. My average blood sugar is in in 100 mg/Dl range."

He then finally looked at me as a patient trying to get healthy not someone looking for a drug fix. In the end he still did not refill my Adderall. I do still have a heart condition and he didn't thing having stems was a good thing. Went to my cardiologist this morning and he said it would not affect it.

So, what I am asking you out there, should I try and find another PCP? The guy was a total a-hole and will not fill medicine my psychotherapist says I need. However, the office is so close and I HATE looking for doctors. Anyone think I should stay?
